TWENTY-ONE

Rain poured onto the helipad and those standing on it. The surface was lit only by the emergency lights on the ground and the headlights from the helicopter. The chopper had come to a complete stop at this point. The wind blowing through Theo Clay’s hair was that of natural forces, no longer the rotor blades. Parker Chase stood to the right of his boss, holding the briefcase.

Hatch stayed crouched behind a pile of boxes at the top of the stairs, hiding her position from the men on the helipad.

No opening yet. She was waiting for the right time to jump in and make her move.

Quinn hardened his expression. He wrapped his right arm around the young girl in front of him and crouched lower, using her as a human shield. The assault rifle was slung around his right shoulder. Pointing to the back of her head was a small pistol he’d grabbed from the back of his waistband. Turning to look at Tyler, his expression remained steady, and he nodded at the other man.

Tyler strode in front of them, moving closer to Clay and Chase.

“Which of you is Quinn?” Clay asked.

“I’m supposed to get the money from you,” Tyler said.

“And are you Quinn?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

Hatch watched the exchange and listened the best she could through the pouring rain. Just moments ago, the young man had seemed so distraught with his involvement. She’d seen the frightened look on his face earlier too, when she’d come so close to shooting him. If Tyler made one small misstep, Hatch would have no choice but to end the young man’s life. If he was in too deep, he would have a hefty price to pay. Would she be willing to end his life to save the others, when she hadn’t been earlier today?

She looked back at Cruise. “What do we do?” she whispered.

Cruise shrugged and glanced back at the helipad. “Seems like he’s in all the way. You sure you’re up for this?”

Hatch looked back at the scene. “I have to be.”

“That wasn’t the arrangement,” Clay said, walking toward Tyler. “I was supposed to hand the money over to Quinn in exchange for my colleague and his daughter. And here you have her at gunpoint. That was not the arrangement.” He stood about a foot in front of Tyler now.

Hatch could tell Tyler was nervous by the way he swallowed every few seconds and held his hands clenched into tight fists. His chest began to move in and out in a faster rhythm, signifying his uptick in adrenaline and oxygen intake.

From behind him, Hatch noticed Parker Chase hold the briefcase higher than before. He took a gun out of a pocket inside his jacket and raised it behind the briefcase, hiding it from their adversaries. But not from Hatch.

She didn’t let this turn of events sway her from the task at hand. Hatch kept her aim on Quinn, avoiding the girl and waiting for the right shot.

“This is getting out of hand.” Clay took a step back from Tyler, looking disgusted and regrouping.
